搴(qiān)舟中流;
Song of the Southerners
Anonymous
What dream did we dream?
Oh, we boated in mid-stream.
What day is today?
Oh, on the same boat with the prince we stay.
Unworthy of his favor high,
Oh, we are so ashamed as to shut our eyes.
Our mind is troubled since,
Oh, to know our prince.
There’re trees in mountains, oh! And trees will grow.
We’re happy to see our prince, oh! But he does not know.

Sad Zither
Li Shangyin
Why should the sad zither have fifty strings?
Each string,each strain evokes but vanished springs;
Dim morning dream to be a butterfly;
Amorous heart poured out in cuckoo’s cry.
In moonlit pearls see tears in mermaid’s eyes;
With sunburned mirth let blue jade vaporize.
Such feeling cannot be recalled again;
It seemed long lost e’en when it was felt then.

One Unnamed
Li Shangyin
As last night twinkle stars, as last night blows the breeze
West of the painted bower, east of Cassia Hall.
Having no wings, I can’t fly to you as I please;
Our hearts at one, your ears can heart my inner call.
Maybe you’re playing hook-in-palm and dringking wine
Or guessing what the cup hides under candle red.
Alas! I hear the drum call me to duties mine,
Like rootless weed to Orchid Hall I ride ahead.
Song of Divination
I live upstream and you downstream.
From night to night of you I dream.
Unlike the stream you are not in view,
though both we drink from River Blue.
When will the River no more flow?
When will my grief no more grow?
I wish your heart would be like mine,
then not in vain for you I pine.
The Reeds
The reeds sway, green and green;
The white dew becomes frost.
The lady fair I mean
Looms yonder, all but lost.
Upstream to her I row;
The course is long and high.
Upstream to her I go;
On the waves she looks shy.
The reeds sway, clean and clean;
The white dew has not dried.
The lady fair I mean
Looms by the riverside.
Upstream to her I row;
The course is hard and high.
Upstream to her I go;
On the strand she seems nigh.
The reeds sway, sheen and sheen;
The white dew as e’er gleams.
The lady fair I mean
Stands on the bank, it seems.
Upstream to her I row;
The course turns left and right.
Upstream to her I go;
On the shoal she beams bright.

Die Lian Hua
Alone I lean against the parapet of a high tower in a gentle breeze,
Gazing into the distance where the grief of separation
Looms on the horizon.
Amidst the grass and hills shimmering in the setting sun,
No one can fathom the inquietude of my mind.
I tried to drown my sorrows in wine and song;
And forced myself to drink to oblivion but I am empty still
My clothes hang loose on my emaciated body
But regrets I have none, it is because of her.

A Cut of Plum
Li Qingzhao
From lotus to bed, aroma does blow.
My silk robe’s lightly doffed.
The lone canoe I row.
Who would send me a letter from the clouds?
When the wild geese come back,
The rail’s moonlit to glow.
Blooms wither, water does on its own flow.
One kind of mutual love,
Two persons’ fretting woe.
Who can get rid of the annoying care?
Now upon my eye brows,
Then in my heart below.

Fish Catching
Dirge to the Goose Grave
I ask this world: what is love on earth
That binds the lovers up in life and death?
As such the coupled geese that plied south and north
Toughly bore successive heat and cold with wings aging.
Joy was enjoyed, yet pain was the parting,
Among the flock was the mate-loser languishing
Who should have wailed:
In heavy clouds that spread boundless,
In evening snow that masked mountains numberless,
Where should I go all alone?
On the way crossing the Fen River ,
None was heard of the old music on the flutes and drums,
Yet gloomy mist was seen as ever in the flat wood.
By singing Chu elegies I tried to call your spirits back,
But only heard of mountain ghosts weeping to the sleet and wind.
I believe not you two, though envied by God,
Would vanish into loess with warblers and swallows dead,
But firm remain, In endless ages to come, for the visits of poets Who’ll sing dirges sadly and drink wine deeply
