相传佛祖释迦牟尼有位名叫目连的弟子，其母死后十分思念母亲。
目莲历经千辛万苦才到阴府，见到死去的母亲，因其母生前铸下大错，已化为饿鬼。目莲用钵盆装菜饭给母亲，却被其他饿鬼夺走，以神通力运饭给其母吃，不料刚进嘴便化为火炭。
目莲无计可施，十分悲哀，只好向佛主求救，佛主被他的孝心感动，授予《盂兰盆经》，目莲按照经中指示，于七月十五日建盂兰盆会，借十方僧众之力让母吃饱。目莲乃依佛嘱，其母才得以吃饱转入人世。
这个故事的意义就是劝人向善，劝子行孝。
