元宵节的意义
The Lantern Festival, also known as Shangyuan Festival, Xiaozhengmu, Yuanxi or Lantern Festival, is one of the traditional Chinese festivals, which takes place on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar every year.
It is the first full moon of the new year, symbolizing unity and perfection.

元宵节的英文表达
权威的《大英百科全书》（Encyclopaedia Britannica）以Lantern Festival收录了元宵节，说它又称Yuan Xiao Festival（“元宵”音译 + 节）。当代的网络百科巨擘维基百科（Wikipedia）也以Lantern Festival收录了元宵节，言其或称Spring Lantern Festival（字面“春天灯笼节”）。卷帙浩繁的《牛津英语词典》（Oxford English Dictionary，简称OED）是英语世界的至尊，没有收录元宵节，却收录了节令食品的yuan hsiao（元宵，威妥玛拼音），并在定义里以Chinese Lantern Festival（字面“华人灯笼节”）指称元宵节。
综上，约定俗成、流通甚广的元宵节英文表达为——Lantern Festival。

元宵节的由来
Chinese started to celebrate the Lantern Festival since the Han Dynasty. It was a time when Buddhism flourished. One emperor ordered to light lanterns in the imperial palace and temples to show respect to Buddha on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. Later, this Buddhist rite gradually developed into a grand festival among common people and its influence expanded from the Central Plains to the whole of China.
