National Day is a legal holiday officially designated(指定) by a country to celebrate and commemorate(纪念) the country's national status or the country itself. They are usually anniversaries(周年纪念日) of the establishment(建立), independence(独立), revolution(革命), signing of the constitution(宪法), the birthday of the head of state(国家元首) or other significant(重大的) commemorative events(纪念事件) of the country. Some are also 'saints' days' of the patron saint(守护神) of the country.
The Chinese word 'National Day' originally refers to national celebrations. It was first seen in the Western Jin Dynasty(西晋). Lu Ji, a writer of the Western Jin Dynasty, once wrote in his article 'On the Five Ranks of Princes' that 'National Day alone enjoys its benefits, and the lord's worries have nothing to do with its harms.' In ancient China, the greatest events of national celebration were nothing more than the enthronement(登基) and birthday(诞辰) of the emperor (in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the emperor's birthday was called the Longevity Festival(万寿节)). Therefore, in ancient China, the enthronement and birthday of the emperor were called 'National Day'. Today, the anniversary(周年纪念日) of the establishment(建立) or independence(独立) day of a country is called National Day.
In 1949, on October 9, the first session(会议) of the first National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference was held in the Diligent Government Hall in Zhongnanhai. Ma Xulun, a member(委员) of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, entrusted(委托) member Xu Guangping to submit a proposal(建议) to the conference due to illness, suggesting that 'the government should clearly designate(指定) October 1 as the National Day of the People's Republic of China to replace the old National Day on October 10.' The conference decided to submit it to the central people's government for adoption(采纳) and implementation(实施).
During the National Day period, various commemorative(纪念性的) activities are held to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs(革命先烈) of the People's Republic of China. Since 2008, on every National Day, the Party and state leaders(党和国家领导人) will lay flower baskets at the Monument to the People's Heroes(人民英雄纪念碑) in Tiananmen Square. Overseas Chinese communities(华侨社区) in many parts of the world will also hold celebrations(庆典), parades(巡游) or flag-raising ceremonies(升旗仪式) and other activities to celebrate.
